On Friday, April 13th, Benson Primary School fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Bessie Mount, was named Cochise County Elementary Teacher of the Year at the annual banquet in Sierra Vista.  Upon receiving her award, which included a plaque and a cash prize, the presenter noted: “Bessie Mount possesses the most important quality in teaching, having high expectations for each of her students.  She expects them to succeed and they do!  She has that rare trait found in exceptional teachers, the ability to deliver innovative instruction that keeps all students engaged and excited about learning”.

Mrs. Mount was nominated by her Principal, Mrs. Jomel Jansson, who wrote:

“Bessie Mount exemplifies excellence in education and is a master teacher.  Bessie is a product of Cochise County having graduated from Buena High School.  She attended Old Dominion College and started her teaching career in Virginia before returning to Cochise County as a 4th grade teacher at Benson Primary School, where she is completing her fourth year.

When you enter Bessie’s classroom you find a warm, welcoming environment that radiates energy.  Student engagement and excitement are evident as a wide variety of instructional strategies are applied.  The use of interactive technology, manipulatives and a variety of hands-on activities accommodate students with various learning styles.  Bessie has created a positive and organized classroom with high expectations for every student. Even the most challenged students find success in her classroom.

Like many outstanding teachers, Bessie wears many hats in Benson School District.  One critical role is Instructional Team Leader where she is responsible for monitoring student achievement on the state standards for all fourth grade students.  She facilitates weekly data meetings where each student’s progress is reviewed and interventions are scheduled as necessary.  Last year this resulted in 87% of fourth grade students meeting or exceeding the state standards in reading, math and science. In her classroom 60% of the students exceeded the state math standards.  Bessie’s commitment to students was a key factor in Benson Primary School receiving an “A” rating by the Arizona Department of Education.

Bessie is a natural leader and quick to assist others.  She is frequently called upon to share her technology expertise both informally with individuals and through workshops with various district staff.  She is continually adding to her extensive knowledge of the educational applications of interactive white boards, document cameras, digital instruction and other technologies.  Teachers and administrators know that they can depend on Bessie Mount and are frequently at her door.

Bessie’s success can be measured quantitatively by attendance rates, student achievement and the absence of discipline referrals.  It can also be measured by students lined up to see her after school, requests to be placed in her classroom and the stream of former students who return to campus to seek her out.  Both point to an outstanding teacher.

I have had the opportunity to work with and observe many exceptional teachers.  I have no doubt that Mrs. Bessie Mount is one of the elite educators in Arizona.  Education in Arizona and the Cochise County Teacher of the Year Program are well represented by Mrs. Mount.”

We are very proud of Mrs. Mount!  And pleased that one of our own wonderful teachers is Cochise County Elementary Teacher of the Year!
